On a sunny battlefield in Gettysburg, 150 years ago today, President Abraham Lincoln gave voice to the enduring resolve of the American people “that government of the people, by the people, for the people shall not perish from the earth.” The question for us now is, do these words describe our nation today? Is it truly a republic “of the people, by the people, for the people?” Or have we allowed the voices of the few – powerful special interests and partisan extremists on both sides — to supplant “the people” from their rightful place as the guiding force in government?

By overwhelming majorities, Americans today feel it is the latter. Not so long ago, in the 1960s, a majority said they believed that the country was “run for the benefit of all the people.” Now just one in five say this. Eight in ten now say the country is “run by a few big interests looking out for themselves.”

On this 150th anniversary of Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address, let us resolve to restore our republic using the 21st-century tools we now have at our disposal, to give the people a greater voice and help America live up to Lincoln’s immortal words. Join our campaign for a national Citizen Cabinet today and find out what you can do to help.

On what issues do you think Congress could really use some guidance from the people?

In the months ahead, VOP will be developing a series of online public consultations on policy issues facing Congress. Tapping the common sense of the American people can help Congress break the gridlock and solve some of the problems it’s having trouble solving on its own. As part of our process, we talk to Members of Congress and key staff from both parties, and ask them to identify issues on which consulting the people would help them make better decisions. But we also want to know what you think.
