Write Your Representative

Try a Policymaking Simulation

A policymaking simulation is an online process that puts citizens in the shoes of elected officials by simulating the process they go through in making policy decisions. Each simulation introduces a broader policy topic and then presents a series of modules that address a specific policy option that is currently under consideration in the current discourse. After taking the policymaking simulation, you’ll have the opportunity to make your voice heard by sending your recommendations to your member(s) of Congress.  Give one a try!

Write a Personal Letter

Another great way to make your voice heard is to write your Representative an email or personal letter.  If you feel moved to write, here are some general guidelines:

  1. Keep it simple. Around three paragraphs and no more than one page is ideal.
  2. Make sure you’re sending it to the right person. [Click here to find the address of your representative]
  3. Make sure you include your home mailing address. Otherwise, it is unlikely to be read at all.
  4. For extra impact, call ahead and ask for the name of the staffer handling government reform issues, and send your letter directly to their attention.
  5. Be courteous. Don’t allow your frustration with Congress to get the better of you. A respectful tone is always more effective and persuasive.
  6. In the first paragraph, introduce yourself, including any honors, accomplishments, or personal details, and say why you are writing, including the bill number(s) and official name(s) of the legislation or pending legislation about which you are writing.
  7. In the second paragraph, explain why you believe your representatives should support or oppose the issue(s) or proposal(s).
  8. Close by thanking them for their time and stating your appreciation for considering your recommendations.
